Four layers to consider
- Transport: Can systems exchange information reliably?
- Structure: Are fields and formats predictable?
- Meaning: Do both sides interpret concepts consistently?
- Workflow: Does information reach the right person at the right time?

Measure the outcome
Avoid measuring success only by message volume. Track unresolved records, manual corrections, delayed reviews and duplicate work. These indicators reveal whether integration improved care operations or merely moved data between systems.
