Preventive Care
Preventive Care Signals That Lead to Action
How digital health teams can turn preventive-care reminders into timely, measurable and equitable follow-up.
A reminder is only the beginning
Preventive care works when a relevant signal leads to a completed action. Sending more notifications rarely fixes missed screenings, vaccinations or follow-up appointments by itself.
Build the pathway, not only the prompt
- Identify who is eligible using current clinical data.
- Explain why the action matters in plain language.
- Offer a direct route to booking or support.
- Track completion, deferral and access barriers separately.
| Stage | Useful measure | Common failure |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible | Population coverage | Outdated records |
| Contacted | Successful delivery | Wrong channel |
| Scheduled | Booking conversion | Complex navigation |
| Completed | Clinical completion | No follow-up loop |
Effective prevention removes the next barrier instead of repeating the same message.
Design for equity
- Support more than one communication channel.
- Use accessible language and formats.
- Make interpreter and transport needs visible.
- Allow a person to explain why they postponed care.
Teams should measure outcomes across groups, not only aggregate conversion. A pathway that performs well overall may still leave a specific community behind.
